The search is on to find about 200 pianists to take part in a concert aiming to set a new world record.

Sunderland Music City is looking for musicians from across the city to take part in an 11-hour concert next month.

The pianists will each be asked to perform a short piece before passing to the next participant to create a continuous relay of music.

The charity’s CEO, Michelle Daurant, said the Keys of the City event was open to everyone from “beginners to concert pianists”.

“Sunderland is a proud music city and this event is about using music to unite our city, to show the power of creativity and to help children who most need our support,” she said.

“We want schools, businesses and community groups to put forward a team, take part and help Sunderland make history.”

It is hoped the concert will beat the current Guinness World Record of 169 pianists, which was set in Hong Kong earlier this year.

The event will also raise money for Love, Amelia – a charity supporting Sunderland families living in poverty.

Sunderland Music City is asking would-be participants to apply in teams of four, to represent their school, business, friend or family group.

The concert will take place from 08:00 to 19:00 GMT, on 7 December at The Fire Station, on High Street West.

Interested musicians have until noon on 26 November to apply.
