When the Device Becomes the Hazard
A boy in mid-childhood walked into a UK emergency department with a six-inch patch of reddish-brown marks on his abdomen – flat, interlacing lines forming irregular circles in what doctors described as a lace-like pattern. He felt no pain. The rash wasn’t warm or tender. Neither he nor his parents could point to an injury, a fall, or any recent trauma that might explain what had appeared on his skin.
The cause turned out to be his laptop. Specifically, the heat it generated sitting on his body every day. The case was written up in BMJ Case Reports by two UK doctors, Mara Znagoveanu and Edward Artley, and it joins a short but growing list of documented physical harms tied not to what screens show, but to what the hardware underneath them does.

What the Doctors Found
The boy was otherwise completely healthy – no fever, no fatigue, no systemic symptoms, no relevant medical history. Growth and development were normal. The patch measured approximately 15 centimeters across and displayed the kind of mottled, net-like discoloration that physicians associate with prolonged, repeated exposure to a low-grade heat source. The pattern isn’t random. It mirrors the shape of the skin’s blood vessel network responding to sustained warmth that isn’t quite hot enough to burn but consistent enough to cause lasting change.
The condition has a name: erythema ab igne, informally called “toasted skin syndrome.” It forms when skin is exposed to infrared radiation or mild heat over a long period – historically seen in people who sat too close to open fires or held heating pads against their bodies for hours. Laptops, particularly when placed directly on laps or abdomens during extended use, generate exactly the kind of steady, localized heat that produces it. The marks can be permanent.
What made this case worth publishing wasn’t the diagnosis itself – toasted skin syndrome from laptop use has been documented in adults before. It was the patient’s age. A child in mid-childhood using a laptop daily with enough frequency and duration that the heat had time to alter the underlying skin structure points to something the consumer electronics industry has never fully resolved: laptops were not designed to rest on the human body, and the name “laptop” has always been a kind of functional lie.

The Hardware Problem Nobody Fixed
Laptop thermal output has been a known engineering issue for decades. Modern processors and GPUs generate substantial heat, and while manufacturers have improved cooling systems considerably, the bottom surfaces of most laptops still reach temperatures that are uncomfortable to hold against skin for extended periods. Regulatory bodies in several countries have issued guidance suggesting laptops be placed on hard, flat surfaces – desks, not legs – but the messaging has never carried urgency, and the product category’s name actively works against it.
Children, who increasingly use laptops for school, entertainment, and gaming, are more likely to use devices in casual, reclined positions – on beds, couches, and floors – where the device rests against the body rather than a surface. A child sitting cross-legged on a carpet with a laptop balanced on their stomach for two hours a day, every day, is doing exactly what erythema ab igne requires to develop.
A Condition That Doesn’t Announce Itself
Part of what makes toasted skin syndrome difficult to catch early is that it doesn’t hurt. The boy in this case had no discomfort at all. There’s no burning sensation during the process, no itching that might prompt a parent to investigate. The marks appear gradually, and by the time they’re visible enough to be alarming, the skin has already been altered.
Znagoveanu and Artley’s case report doesn’t describe any treatment beyond identifying the cause and presumably advising the family to stop resting the laptop on the boy’s body. Whether the marks will fade or remain is not specified in the published details – erythema ab igne can sometimes resolve after the heat source is removed, but in chronic cases, the hyperpigmentation becomes permanent and may carry a very small associated risk of skin changes over time.
The condition sits in an awkward space medically. It’s not an emergency. It’s not contagious. It doesn’t require medication or surgery. But it is a visible, potentially lasting record of how the device was used, etched into the skin in a pattern that looks, to anyone unfamiliar with it, like something far more alarming – which is exactly why this boy’s parents ended up in an emergency department in the first place.

Manufacturers print warnings in user manuals about not operating laptops directly on soft surfaces like beds, citing fire risk from blocked vents. The skin damage risk doesn’t appear in the same language, with the same prominence, or in the same place a child or parent would actually see it before the habit forms.
