What Happens When You Remove Everything That Makes a Bentley Comfortable
Bentley flew Ars Technica journalists from Washington, DC, to Monterey, California, and covered accommodation costs so they could drive the new Supersports – and take a ride in the preproduction Torcal EV, which earned its own writeup last week. The Supersports itself is a different animal entirely from anything else wearing a Bentley badge right now: no rear seats, no all-wheel drive, no hybrid system. Just weight removed, progressively, like an engineer solving an equation by deleting variables until something clean is left.
That exercise in subtraction happens against a specific backdrop. Bentley’s Crewe, England headquarters has been running two parallel experiments at once – one pointing toward electrification with the Torcal EV, the other asking how far back you can strip a road car before it stops being a road car and starts being something else. The Supersports answers that second question with a machine that shares DNA with the Continental GT but shares almost nothing of its philosophy.

From W12 to V8 PHEV – and Then Beyond
The architecture underneath the Supersports traces back to the Continental GT’s transition away from W12 power. Bentley moved to a V8 plug-in hybrid configuration for the new Continental GT, and by most accounts that shift improved the car rather than compromised it. A wet Spanish racetrack served as the setting for Ars’s first drive of that PHEV two-door, where the powertrain’s characteristics became apparent in conditions that pushed the chassis toward its limits.
While that PHEV Continental GT was being evaluated on Spanish tarmac, a separate group of Bentley engineers was already pulling at a different thread. The question they were working through: what if you built a version of that same car without the hybrid components at all? Strip out the electric motor, the battery pack, the added complexity that plug-in architecture requires. The weight reduction alone would change the car’s fundamental character.
All-wheel drive followed the hybrid system off the specification sheet. Every road-going Bentley produced since the turn of the century has sent power to all four wheels – it has been as consistent a feature of the brand as the stitched leather and the hand-finished cabin details. Removing it from the Supersports is not a small decision. It changes the weight distribution, the handling balance, and the driver’s relationship with the car in ways that trickle through every aspect of how the machine behaves.
The rear seats went too. That detail matters practically as well as symbolically. Rear seats are not just metal and foam and upholstery – they are mounting points, structural considerations, and a meaningful chunk of mass positioned behind the driver. Their absence reshapes the interior into something closer to a dedicated driver’s environment, the kind of cabin architecture where the design brief has been written around the person holding the wheel rather than the passengers behind them.

Porsche Wrote the Playbook; Bentley Is Following It
Stripped-out road cars built from luxury or performance platforms have a clear precedent. Porsche has spent decades refining exactly this approach – taking a production car, removing what road drivers need but track-oriented drivers don’t, and selling the result at a premium to buyers who understand what they’re getting. The formula works commercially and it works as a product statement, because the act of removing features can communicate confidence in the underlying engineering more effectively than adding them.
Bentley arriving at a similar conclusion is notable because the brand’s historical identity runs in the opposite direction. More has always been the point – more refinement, more insulation from road noise, more technology managing the car’s behavior. The Supersports positions itself as a deliberate inversion of that logic, and whether the Bentley customer base has appetite for that inversion is a genuinely open question that Monterey is designed to help answer.
Two Cars, One Company, Very Different Arguments
The Torcal EV and the Supersports are being developed and shown to press simultaneously, which makes them an odd pair to hold in mind at once. The Torcal is Bentley’s argument for attracting new customers – people who want the brand’s craftsmanship attached to a battery drivetrain, part of a broader commitment to making sustainability central to Bentley’s identity rather than incidental to it. The Supersports makes no such argument. It exists for a narrower audience, one already inside the brand’s orbit.
That division of purpose is not unusual for a manufacturer running multiple product lines, but the timing compresses it into a single moment. Bentley is asking the market to process an electric SUV and a stripped rear-wheel-drive coupe as products from the same company with the same values, which requires a certain flexibility in how “the Bentley character” gets defined. Sustainability as brand identity and weight reduction as engineering purity are not contradictory positions, but holding both simultaneously asks something of the marque’s coherence.

Monterey, California is a particular kind of stage for this sort of reveal. The Monterey car week draws buyers whose garages already contain the cars that engineers like these are inspired by – original lightweights, limited-production variants, the cars that appreciated because someone at a factory decided to take a saw to the specification sheet. Bentley brought the Supersports to exactly the right audience.
What remains to be seen is what the Supersports weighs on paper against what it actually feels like on a real road – rear-wheel drive, no hybrid assist, no back seats, launched from Crewe into a market where Porsche has already trained buyers to pay more for less. The Continental GT PHEV exists as the comfortable answer. The Supersports is the question Bentley’s engineers couldn’t stop asking themselves, which is a different thing entirely from a product that a sales team would design from scratch.
